2of 2 Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition
of paintings by Toronto based artist Lex Buchanan. The walls of 2 of 2 Gallery are enlivened by the hyperactive and transitory spaces that compose Lex Buchanan’s solo exhibition. Vibrant and haunting arcades, carousels, and abodes capture the aloof serenity of deserted spaces. Buchanan’s paintings become the locus of an intimate rendezvous that anticipates nascent yet sublime speculations. Urban simulacra are stripped of function. “Coaster” offers the familiar sight of an abandoned amusement park ride; the apparatus is empty of thrill seekers and despite its dynamic function stands frozen in time. We are free, as we rarely are, to pause (and to pause before) the ephemeral decay of the derelict object. Places, so familiar to us, become strangely dissonant. Buchanan paints scenes captured in manipulated photographs, with the distortions particular to the medium–saturation, slow shutter speeds, blurring – intensified in the oil paintings. Deliberate confusion of perspective distracts the eye in its habitual search for focus and illusionism becomes a paradox executed in vibrant jewel-like neon tones and impenetrable shadows. The failure of painting to capture technology in transit becomes its power: Buchanan’s work shows the potential for creativity and manipulation within the arid hypermodern landscape.
