GALEN JOHNSON
Aerograd

Galen Johnson’s Aerograd is an ongoing series of ink on paper architectural drawings that explore the cityscape as an organism capable of adaptation, even in the event of its own destruction.  The drawings seek to express a sense of the inevitability of urban disintegration within a vast surrounding space - pieces composed and presented not as a dystopian dread-mongering fantasy of decline, but as a candid perspective in the ongoing debate concerning the formation and preservation of communities.

Born in 1981, Galen Johnson is a Winnipeg artist and has a Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture) from the University of Manitoba. His first solo show Aerograd which showed at Winnipeg’s Semai Gallery in December - January, is featured in the current issue of Border Crossings magazine (issue #109).

LORENZO PEPITO
Tipping Balance

Pepito’s exhibition of paintings at 2 of 2 Gallery are meticulously faithful in rendering the likeness of appropriated eBay photos, specifically their rudimentary representation of the actual shoeboxes. What can be appreciated are the playful tensions created through the calculated use of edges that render the painting with an active state of confinement. Attention to details like holes, creases, rips and stains add an unexpected level of endearing realism in Pepito’s art, while sticker labels initiate dialogue with the work. The box image performs a bold art function as it’s removed from its original context and displaced within pure white space.

Much of post-modern art is referenced after the economic shift toward North American production that resulted after World War II.  Similarly, the current status of athletic shoes as a post-modern economic force flourished as an aftermath of the same
phenomenon.

Born in 1981, Lorenzo Pepito lives and works in Vancouver, has a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (Vancouver, BC).  In 2008 he was semi-finalist of RBC Canadian Painting Exhibition.  In 2008 and 2009 Pepito’s work, as part of RBC Canadian Painting Exhibition, exhibited at Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver, BC), Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton, AB), Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, SK), The Power Plant (Toronto, ON), Museum London (London, ON), The Rooms (St John’s, NL), Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (Montréal, QC), The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON).
