2 of 2 Gallery  is pleased to present a solo exhibition of painting by Toronto based artist Michael Vigneux.

Michael Vigneux’s premier solo exhibition, aptly titled, “Human Space,” captures the progression of industry and modern development, coupled with fading neighborhoods of the past; alive with their own processes of deterioration. To achieve the avid juxtaposition of the former and the contemporary, Vigneux bases his material both from current New York cityscapes and the fictional. The results are images that the viewer will regard for both their familiarity and obscurity.

Vigneux in select paintings refreshingly pulls away from the verticals and horizontals of everyday and offers the viewers self created panoramic views in which one is swept in and first glance to the busy life of the city, ebbing and flowing in and out of the many streets and façades grasping a wealth of information, some accurate some imaginary. The viewer however will not be prompt at deciphering what materials are illusionary, for Vigneux has blended the two worlds simultaneously to look so dynamic and existent.

Vigneux desires to capture moments in time so that the audience can re-examine the life of a city, one that is never at rest. New condos and revitalized architecture are brought back to the forgotten neighborhood, and derelict buildings are replaced by gleaming glass and luxury. What pulls the economy of a neighborhood? Will all forgotten areas once again be renewed? Vigneux poses interesting questions with his images, questions that most urbanites will relate to.  In this era of re-use and recycling, Vigneux’s show introduces the viewer to the potential of old space and the speed at which it is being rediscovered.

Overall Vigneux has treaded very smartly on the slippery slope of industrial representation, which can often be repetitious and inactive. Here the viewer instantly becomes taken by the realistic qualities of the paintings, and their intriguing style. There is always something to look at whether it is obvious or more illusive. Vigneux strives to see the potential of space; the changeability of metropolis, undoubtedly his audience will be in accord.
