2 of 2 Gallery  is pleased to present a solo exhibitions of new paintings by Vancouver based artist Shelley Penfold.

Shelley Penfold’s paintings exist in the figurative tradition and are often presented as portraits.  The portrait style she uses links to one of the central ideas in her work which is the phenomenology of consciousness and often is involved in looking at generalized activities, actions and the things of being and stripping away the unnecessary to provide a specific experience for recollection and memory to exist.

The production of work in this new series began with the idea to portray singular moments in daily life.   These moments although considered banal could be interpreted and visualized in numerous ways while at the same time calling to attention the poetics in the simplicity of being.   Each painting’s beginning, middle and end was involved in positing a single question such as, what does the experience of breathing in the aroma of a bouquet of flowers look like, or, what does the moment before waking up look like?

Penfold considers the images to be a part of an alternate world, the subjective space of hers, where she is aware of the parts of making a painting and conscious of the decisions that are made when creating images. At the same time she employs her imagination to picture the world of the subjects on the canvas, so that they become almost living beings, true to the history of art, that what is being portrayed on the canvas is a reflection of a world.  In Penfold’s work the inner world and outer world overlap and it becomes hard to separate the two.

Shelley Penfold completed her MFA at the University of Victoria in 2009.  Her work was included in MFA 2009 Thesis Exhibition catalogue with an assay Kitty Scott.  Penfold works primarily as a painter and usually employs the figure or landscape to play out  imaginary narratives.  She has been involved in solo and group exhibitions in Vancouver and has completed several commissions in the years following her graduation from Emily Carr University in 2003.
