2 of 2 Gallery is pleased to present a solo
exhibitions of new sculptures by Toronto based artist
David McDougall. David McDougall is a figurative sculpture whose work is self-defined as “the phenomenon of play unveiled in the rupture of the real” which borrows from a diverse range of visual representations while subtly injecting mischievous humour in the reception of sign-signifier codes, informed by the reflective cues and forms embodied by his figures. While the principles of the poetic are at the core of McDougall’s practice, his work is oriented around the idea that abstract and open narratives communicated through the simplicity of the figurative portrait, can allow individuals to understand their own life experiences differently. They are designed and constructed as subjective objects the viewer can engage with informally and intimately, as anti-monuments memorializing and celebrating the strange and wonderful personalities that inhabit our everyday world. David’s solo show Plague Ledger depicts a quiet contemplation while engaging in multiple contemporary discourses ranging from aesthetic concerns to postmodern irony, yet his focus remains fixed on an ontological exploration of identification in material culture. David describes play as a “configuration of the imagination”, while pointing out that present theme considers “the adaptive purpose of play and its amorphous relationship to reality”. The ambiguity of this relationship serves to actively fluctuate the meaning between shifting notions from the real/imaginary, sense/nonsense, and the mundane/virtual, enticing the viewer to play with the work’s meaning as well. David McDougall earned MFA from York University (2008) and a BFA from Queen’s University (2005). He has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions in Toronto, Kingston, and Cambridge, Ontario. In recognition of his artistic achievements, David McDougall’s work has received several awards and nominations, including the York University Talent Award (2006) and the Elizabeth Greenshields’ Foundation Award (2008). David lives and works in Toronto.
